I had the pleasure of trying Nashville Hot Chicken this past weekend. Think a fried chicken sandwich, coated in a spicy sauce (the OG restaurant Hattie B’s combines hot fry oil with chili powder and spices to make theirs). While Hot Chicken is totally delicious, it is, after all, fried chicken with an oil sauce. So, lets give this chicken the ol food good treatment and see if we can keep the flavors, but lighten it up for weeknight dinner. May i present Jim’s healthy Nashville Hot Chicken Recipe!
Jim's Nashville Hot Chicken
Ingredients
- 2 boneless/skinless chicken breasts (thighs also great)
- 1/2 cup flour (rice, all purpose, your choice)
- 1/4 cup chili powder (my recipe below)
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 awesome rolls
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/3 cup hot sauce
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flake
Instructions
- In a large bowl, salt the chicken, then coat the chicken in the chili powder and flour (you may have some left over powders, that's okay). Place the chicken in your air fryer and spray with non stick spray. Cook at 400 deg F for 20 minutes.** Make sure it hits 165 deg F.
- As chicken cooks, combine honey, hot sauce, pepper flake, and a pinch of salt in a small pot. Heat until it bubbles and set aside.
- Make a sandwich with the cooked chicken drizzled with sauce. I'm not going to tell you how to make a sandwich. I believe in you.
Notes
2 tablespoons ancho chile powder
1 tablespoons sweet paprika
1 teaspoon black pepper ** No air fryer? No problem. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat until it starts to shimmer. Place chicken breasts in skillet and don't touch for 6-7 minutes minutes. Flip chicken and cook another ~6 minutes or until 165.
